Wix, Hosted Websites or Custom Development: Which Fits Your Business?
For a salon, restaurant, accountant or other local business, choosing a website approach is largely about who handles setup, routine updates and eventual migration.
Wix, a provider-managed website and custom development can all work. Match the approach to your time, budget and need for control.
Wix: for owners who want to build it themselves
Wix offers templates, an editor, hosting and apps. It suits a limited cash budget with time to learn, standard pages and features, and owners willing to manage layout, photos, mobile usability and SEO settings.
You own your content, but the full site depends on Wix’s SaaS infrastructure. You cannot simply export it to another host; a domain can be managed separately, while the website remains on Wix. Read Wix’s export and external-hosting explanation. Moving to another system usually requires rebuilding. A low entry cost does not eliminate maintenance.
Provider-managed hosting: pay to save time
A provider builds, launches, hosts and updates a website within an agreed standard scope. This suits owners who want a faster launch, do not want to learn technical settings, and need a relatively standard site with maintenance.
Starter: $399 setup + $69/$99/$199 monthly; Essential: $800 setup + $109/$199/$349 monthly; Pro: $1,500 setup + $269/$399/$599 monthly. Essential bilingual: +$200 setup and +$20 monthly. No first-year lock-in. Custom development from $5,000 with prepaid milestones. See the quote page.
TaulTech distinguishes these packages: Starter uses an industry template; Essential and Pro are individually designed, and Pro includes an admin system. Each has a setup fee and monthly service, with no first-year lock-in. After 12 months, a source-code usage license is included; copyright remains with TaulTech. Your domain, content and data belong to you. Custom development uses prepaid milestones and separately agreed source-code rights.
Custom development: independent implementation for specific needs
Custom work designs pages, backends and workflows around your requirements. It suits distinctive visuals, CMS, accounts, payments, integrations, independent source code or evolving workflows that standard platforms constrain.
Custom does not mean reinventing everything. Booking, payments, email and maps can still use established services. Focus custom work on the pages and logic that make your business different.

Four questions to decide
Who will maintain the content?
A self-service platform may save cash if you will learn and use it. Without time, an inexpensive site can remain untouched for years.
What happens when you leave?
Ask whether the site goes offline, what can be exported, whether you retain the domain and how much must be rebuilt.
Do you need the feature now?
Do not build a membership system just because it might be useful someday. Validate the need, then expand.
Does the cost include your time?
Editing photos, arranging pages, checking mobile layouts, writing copy and troubleshooting take time even when the subscription is inexpensive. Hosted and custom fees include different amounts of professional work.
A quick comparison
| Your situation | A practical starting point |
|---|---|
| You want to build and maintain it yourself | Wix or a similar platform |
| You need a standard site built and maintained for you | Provider-managed hosting |
| You need special design, a backend, integrations or independent code | Custom development |
| Requirements are uncertain | A small launch, then improvements based on evidence |
None is universally best. Compare renewals, migration and account control alongside the first-year price. Read the ownership checklist or use the quote calculator.
